This past week was a week of firsts. My first time in Las Vegas, my first time at a music festival, and my first time at a music festival wearing a photo pass around my neck. What occurrence brought all these firsts into play, you ask? Psycho Las Vegas, a three-day music festival (August 19-21) known for its diverse lineups that feature music from many different genres, including black metal, electronica and psychedelic rock.

Psycho Las Vegas debuted at the Hard Rock Hotel in 2018, spending its first three years there before moving to Mandalay Bay for its 2019 and 2021 editions. This past year, it moved into Resorts World Las Vegas with its 3,506 guest rooms and suites, seven pools, 70,000 square feet of luxury shopping and world-class food and beverage options.

The festival featured infamous Norwegian black metal band Emperor, American crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies and Danish heavy metal legends (and one of my favorite bands!) Mercyful Fate closing out the festival (their first live performance in 23 years!). Sin City indeed.

And thanks to my lil brother Ruben (who runs Le Poisson Rouge in NYC and has close ties to the good folks at Psycho Las Vegas), I also had that photo pass. My first time in the coveted photographer’s pit! Was I nervous? Maybe just a bit. But was I was also pretty damn confident that my photographs would be as good, if not better, than anyone else in that pit? Damn straight, I was.

But as far as that goes, I’ll leave that all up to you as I post my photographs from what was an absolutely wonderful music festival. Several indoor stages across the sprawling Resorts World Las Vegas (I mean, who wants to be outside in Vegas in August?!), including a pool side stage in the evenings, with all types of different music acts going from 11am to 1am.

What types of acts, you ask? Everything from death metal veterans like Carcass, At the Gates and Rotting Christ to all-girl indie rock acts like Warpaint and gothic singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler and electro-pop act Geneva Jacuzzi, to hip hop acts like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (not to mention the chance to play a game of chess with GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan!) and a hell of a lot of excellent smaller acts sandwiched in between.
