Being a photographer at Psycho Las Vegas allowed me to be able to stand in the photographer’s pit (for the first time at a major music festival) and behold one of my favorite metal bands, Mercyful Fate. Not far behind them was another band from my metalhead youth that were closing out day two of the festival – crossover punk/thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies.

Since purchasing their classic self-titled debut album in 1983 and following their progression as a thrash metal outfit through “How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today” and “Lights…Camera…Revolution!” (both with guitarist Rocky George) – this was a band I was very excited to finally see live.

Formed in 1980 in Venice, California, by vocalist Mike Muir (younger brother of original Z-Boy and Dogtown Skateboard founder Jim Muir), the band has undergone various lineup changes, with Muir as the only remaining original member. Since the release of their debut album in 1983, the band have constantly evolved through their fourteen studio albums and two “Best Metal Performance” Grammy nominations.

Suicidal Tendencies now consists of Mike Muir (who was in constant motion on stage), Ben Weinman of Dillinger Escape Plan on rhythm guitar, Dean Pleasants (who replaced lead guitarist Rocky George), Tye Trujillo on bass (son of Metallica bassist Robert, who was the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies from 1989 to 1995) and Greyson Nekrutman on drums.
