This year I was back at the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts, which celebrated its 18th edition. Held at The Walk of Coral Springs every March, the festival attracts 30,000–40,000 people from all over the South Florida area. The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts highlights some of the region’s finest artisans and contemporary crafters while also featuring a diverse offering of live music performances, dance, food vendors (not to mention the many restaurants already located at The Walk), literary presentations, and plenty of activities for kids.

This is an event I really look forward to every year. I missed it last year due to a previously scheduled weekend shoot and was happy to be back. You wouldn’t think of the sleepy little city of Coral Springs to be home to one of the most dynamic arts festivals in South Florida but guess what? It really is.

The city is also home to the Coral Springs Museum of Art (which also offers a wide range of classes, workshops, and events for preschoolers, youths, teens, and adults), the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (an expansive cultural center that offers music, theater, comedy and dance), and a public art collection featuring permanently sited and integrated works which are commissioned through a public process. There are a lot of “sexier” cities in South Florida that couldn’t hold a candle to that.

More importantly, it’s where I settled my family when we arrived in South Florida from New York way back in 2003 so it will always have a special place in my heart. As for the festival, it’s one of the best (multicultural) events you can attend over two days in South Florida. Proceeds from the Festival (a 501C3 corporation) benefit nonprofit artistic endeavors within the community.

Ronin Taiko, a Fort Lauderdale based Japanese Drum troupe, is one of the highlight performances at the festival (check out the full gallery HERE)

This year’s Tee Shirt Design Contest, hosted by Meryl Katlin, owner TypeStyles Inc. and MakeATeeOnlineStudents, invited students in grades K-12 to design images for T-shirts and showcase those designs during the second day of the festival. First, second, and third place winners were selected in three-to-five age group categories with some winners being far more excited than others…

The Mission of Gardenfest Coral Springs is to provide the serious and occasional gardener an opportunity to experience and learn about (and purchase) a wide variety of flowers and plants.

The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is one of my favorite events in South Florida.
