This past weekend, my new ladyfriend Serena invited me to attend a joint presentation by two up-and-coming community organizations; “Persist, Resist, Survive!”, a community choir show (and local meet-up) presented by Miami Sound Space and We Met in Miami at The Citadel, a mixed-use complex offering local artisanal foods, retail, and live music.

Laurah Merisier, Founder & Director, Miami Sound Space

Miami Sound Space is a soon-to-be 501(c)3 organization dedicated to creating unforgettable musical experiences for all. Through diverse music-making opportunities, they seek to inspire positive change, combat community deterioration, and ensure accessibility for everyone. Laurah Merisier is the Founder & Director of the program; a graduate from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Music (and a Master’s Degree) in Music Education.

Miami Sound Space offers three programs:

Miami Sound Choir:
Their flagship ensemble, and Miami’s non audition, all-inclusive, adult community choir. Miami Sound Choir is a community engagement partner of the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, where rehearsals are held every Wednesday from 6-8 pm. The Bluebirds:
A men’s choir made up of singers who are incarcerated at the Everglades Correctional Institution. Their mission is to invite incarcerated individuals into the world of community music-making, specifically through the joy of singing together. A video presentation was part of the evening’s programming.

Threshold Choir:
A small group of gentle voices singing at patients’ bedsides and creating moments of solace, comfort, and peace in various end-of-life services. The program included a demonstration as a volunteer sat in the “Death Chair”.

We Met in Miami

We Met in Miami is a new nonprofit aiming to tackle the city’s notoriously difficult dating and people-meeting scene. The nonprofit’s mission is to foster love, friendship and IRL (in real life) connections through community service, civic engagement and the arts throughout the city.

Jessica Bakeman, Founder, We Met in Miami

Founder Jessica Bakeman (who is also an Executive Board Member of Miami Sound Space) created We Met in Miami because she wanted to meet people in person instead of online. The organization partners with existing community organizations already working to connect people through shared interests.

Once at the event, attendees choose either a green (love), blue (friendship) or rainbow (LBGTQ+) wristband to signal what each person is looking for. During intermission, attendees had the opportunity to mingle and chat. Then it was back to the music.
