My last post featured images from a dynamic set by Zamrock legends W.I.T.C.H. at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC. Opening for the band was a very pleasant surprise, the trippy pop of Iranian-American singer-songwriter Rahill.

As a founding member of Brooklyn garage-rock mainstays, Habibi, Rahill Jamalifard garnered a reputation for alchemizing an eclectic range of influences, distilling them into captivating and heavy pop songs that gestured towards the modes and melodies of the Iranian/American household in which she was raised.

After releasing her four song ep EP entitled “Sun Songs” on Ninja Tune sub-label Big Dada, she released her debut solo album last year “Flowers At Your Feet” which included features from Beck and Jasper Marsalis (Slauson Malone) with production by Alex Epton (FKA Twigs, Arca).

In Sheep’s Clothing HiFi: Drawing from trip-hop, jazz, alternative rock, and soul, the album is a wonderfully nostalgic trip through faded memories with a warm analog sound comprised of Mellotron, tape fuzz, breakbeats, and low-slung basslines.

Her set, somewhat of a calm before the W.I.T.C.H. storm, was one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve encountered at a show at LPR. Don’t miss her should she be coming to a city near you.
