After catching The Lemonheads at Le Poisson Rouge the night before, Serena (my ladyfriend) and I were looking for a new live music venue (closer to our home base in The Bronx) to visit on a Friday night. We located one in Harlem called Shrine World Music Venue – a self-proclaimed multimedia arts and culture venue founded in 2007 by musicians for musicians.

The venue’s mission is to establish “a positive creative atmosphere for both artists and audiences from all backgrounds” and serves as an avenue for bands to promote themselves and grow their fan base. It also offers food and full bar and is 21 and over only.

On the bill that night was a local band called Moon Soul, “a psychedelic soul band that blends the sounds of The Zombies, Fela Kuti, Tame Impala, and Sly & the Family Stone into something funky and totally original”.

Well, we decided to see (and hear) about that so we grabbed an Uber from the Bronx to 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd. in Harlem. Were they as raw and funky as they claimed to be? Scroll past the photographs to find out…

As the photographs probably illustrate, Moon Soul did not disappoint, putting on one hell of a funky show. And as for Shrine World Music Venue, we found it a pretty cool place to catch a live show (and they put on several different acts daily). Service isn’t particularly speedy (and I’d bypass the chicken quesadillas) but like many similar small music venues, Shrine is mostly about the live music experience – and on that end they delivered. Pay them a visit should you find yourself in or around NYC – we’ll definitely be back.
