Albertina Modern

Being the art museum nerds we are (especially for modern art), you didn’t think we’d dare leave the lovely city of Vienna without a visit to its prestigious palace of modern art, did you? Perish the thought.

A visit to the Albertina Museum consist of three parts: A set of modern galleries that include the permanent art display, special art exhibitions, and a self-guided tour of the Albertina staterooms in all their 19th-century majesty.

The Albertina Modern features its own exhibitions that focus on 20th and 21st century art. With its collection of over 60,000 works by 5,000 artists over 2,000 square meters, the Albertina Modern ranks among the world’s largest museums of modern and contemporary art.

The State Rooms of the largest Habsburg residential palace were once lived in by the favorite daughter of Empress Maria Theresia, Archduchess Marie-Christine, and later by her adopted son, Archduke Karl, the winner of the Battle of Aspern against Napoleon. 20 sumptuously decorated and painstakingly restored Habsburg State Rooms transport visitors into the magnificent world of classicism.

Albertina Modern makes its home in the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, which was built between 1865 and 1868 and has since served as a place for the exhibition of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and applied art. This model work of architecture was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph as a gift to the city’s artists in 1865.

After a golden era of popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, the building disappeared behind construction scaffolding for over 20 years before the generous patronage of Austrian industrialist and former politician, Hans Peter Haselsteiner, ultimately made possible its renovation, expansion, and modernization.

The Albertina Museum is open daily from 10am – 6pm with tickets setting you back €19.90. It is well worth a visit. Enjoy the gallery…
