In my last post, we visited the picturesque fishing port of Cudillero, considered Northern Spain’s most beautiful village. And in this post, we visit Playa de Peñarronda, Northern Spain’s most beautiful beach? Well, we only visited one beach in Asturias and our opinion might be contested by the locals but it just might have been the most beautiful beach we’ve ever visited.

Playa de Peñarronda is a breathtaking white sandy beach a mere 6 minute drive from our hotel whose natural values have led it to be declared a Natural Monument. The beach stretches approximately 600 meters long and is nestled between the high cliffs of La Robaleira and Punta del Corno headlands, forming peninsulas on either side of the beach.

Having missed out on the sold out (and far more popular) Playa de las Catedrales, Peñarronda Beach was more than just a suitable consolation prize. The “Pedra Castelo”, a rounded promontory in the center of the beach that gives the beach its name (“round rock”), is accessible at low tide and has a cavity in its center that allows visitors to walk from one side to the other.
The beach also features a small eatery by the parking lot called Peñarronda Playa Chiringuito that offers up “Bocatas” (sandwiches) that were unbelievably good. I mean, if this sandwich joint were located in NYC, there’d be a line two blocks long during lunchtime to buy one. If you ever visit this remarkable beach, make it a priority to stop in for a sandwich. You can thank me afterwards.

Despite it being a partly cloudy day (which was fine by us), Playa de Peñarronda was one of those beaches that just left us in awe. A beach like this in just about any other part of Europe in August would be overrun with tourists. Here in Asturias? Uncrowded, peaceful, clean, and a joy to walk. It was a recurring theme of our trip to Galicia (and Asturias): stunning natural beauty unspoilt by mass tourism. At least not yet. Enjoy the gallery…
