The Carlotta Gallery, a virtual gallery dedicated to contemporary photography from around the world, kicked off a unique exhibition today featuring images from an extraordinary part of the world. And I’m very happy to announce that one of my photographs has been selected to their “Central and South America” exhibition. The photograph, “Cañari Woman” was taken with my recently repurchased Pentax K-1 in the town of Ingapirca during my recent trip to Ecuador with Serena this past December.

In her acceptance email, Carlotta Olympia Pompei, the gallery curator and fine art photographer, didn’t just send out a generic message (“Congratulations, your photograph has been selected!”) but a detailed reason why she chose the photograph – here’s a snippet: “I found the photograph to be very beautiful in its simplicity and atmosphere. The colours are particularly appealing to me as they give the image a sense of warmth and character, while also creating a lovely harmony between the subject and her surroundings. There is also a quietness to the photograph that I find very compelling.”
For a photographer like myself, that sort of feedback has a lot of value. I’ve had several photographs chosen for exhibitions in the past but rarely am I given a reason why it was chosen – or, for that matter, why it wasn’t chosen. I’m usually just happy that the judge(s) thought my photograph was worthy of selection but knowing ‘Why?’ can be a great help in our continuing journey as photographers. And that the selected photograph was taken in the country that my ladyfriend Serena was born in? Gravy.
So, thank you, Carlotta.
